Chapter 5 - The Man Without a FaceMaya rode to the hospital with Daniel holding her hand.

Nora followed in another vehicle while officers remained at the mansion.

Vanessa was not permitted to leave.

Daniel had not spoken to her after Maya's rescue.

He didn't trust himself.

The emergency department placed Maya in a private room. Doctors examined her for dehydration, bruising, infection, and other injuries. She was exhausted and frightened but physically stable.

That sentence became the first good thing Daniel had heard in three days.

“She needs fluids, food, rest,” the doctor said. “And eventually someone experienced in trauma counseling.”

Daniel nodded.

“Anything she needs.”

Maya lay beneath a white blanket.

She refused to release his hand.

Daniel sat beside her.

For nearly an hour he asked nothing.

He wanted answers badly enough to feel them vibrating inside his bones, but he could see what every question cost her.

Finally Maya spoke first.

“Is Vanessa here?”

“No.”

“Is she mad?”

Daniel felt something break inside him.

“No, sweetheart.”

“She'll be mad at me.”

“No.”

He leaned closer.

“Vanessa doesn't get to be mad at you.”

Maya looked toward the door.

“She said nobody would find me if I didn't stay quiet.”

Daniel tightened his grip on her fingers.

“What happened?”

Maya swallowed.

“I went downstairs because Pearl got out.”

“Pearl?”

“She followed me into Vanessa's office.”

Daniel frowned.

Maya explained slowly.

Three afternoons earlier, she had been chasing Pearl through the upstairs hallway. The bird landed on the open door of Vanessa's small office.

Vanessa was on the phone.

Maya had heard her say, “He'll sign tomorrow if we keep him distracted.”

When Maya stepped into the room, Vanessa ended the call.

Maya noticed papers spread across the desk.

One had Daniel's signature.

Another had the name MERCER DEVELOPMENT ACQUISITION GROUP.

“I asked why Uncle Grant's name was on Dad's company,” Maya said.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

“What did Vanessa say?”

“She said it was boring grown-up stuff.”

Maya had photographed the documents with her tablet.

Vanessa saw her.

An argument followed.

Vanessa told her to delete the pictures.

Maya refused.

Then Vanessa did something that would replay in Daniel's mind for years.

She began crying.

Not yelling.

Crying.

“She said Uncle Grant would ruin everything if I showed you.”

“Did she say why?”

Maya nodded.

“She said she owed him money.”

Daniel looked toward Nora, who had entered quietly.

“How much?”

“I don't know.”

Maya continued.

Vanessa asked Maya to come with her to the pump house because she wanted to show her something that would “explain everything.”

That was where the man appeared.

“He had a baseball cap,” Maya said. “And something over his face.”

“Could you see his clothes?”

“Gray jacket. Black pants.”

“Voice?”

“Low.”

“Anything else?”

Maya hesitated.

“He smelled like Dad's office.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The wood smell.”

Nora understood first.

“Cologne?”

Maya nodded.

“Maybe.”

Grant wore cedar-and-vetiver cologne.

Daniel had bought him a bottle for Christmas.

Nora did not react.

“Anything visible on his hands?”

Maya closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“A silver thing.”

“Ring?”

“No. Here.”

She pointed toward Daniel's wrist.

“Cufflink.”

Daniel's chest tightened.

“What did it look like?”

“A little lighthouse.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Calder Development had celebrated its fiftieth anniversary two years earlier.

Executives received custom silver cufflinks.

A lighthouse engraved on one side.

Daniel owned a pair.

So did Grant.

So did eleven other senior employees.

Nora wrote it down.

Maya continued.

The masked man opened the blue door.

Vanessa took Maya through the passage.

Maya realized too late they were locking her inside.

“She kept saying it would only be a few hours.”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“It was three days.”

“I know.”

“Did Vanessa bring you food?”

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did the man come back?”

Maya's face tightened.

“Once.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What happened?”

“He was mad.”

“At you?”

“At Vanessa.”

“What did he say?”

Maya looked at Nora.

“He said Dad hadn't signed yet.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He searched his memory.

Papers.

Meetings.

Documents.

Three days earlier Grant had indeed brought a transaction package to the house.

Daniel had refused to read it because Maya was missing.

Grant had returned the next morning.

Said the company needed the signature urgently.

Daniel had nearly signed just to make him leave.

Vanessa stopped him.

That memory shocked him.

She had stopped him.

She had said, “Not now. Daniel can't think.”

Why would she do that if she wanted the deal completed?

Maya tugged his hand.

“Dad?”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Vanessa was scared of him.”

Nora's pen paused.

“The masked man?”

“Yes.”

“She helped him confine you.”

“I know.”

“But you think she feared him?”

Maya nodded.

“When he came back, he grabbed her arm.”

Daniel looked toward Nora.

That changed nothing legally.

But it changed the shape of the story.

A nurse entered.

“Maya needs rest.”

Daniel nodded.

He kissed his daughter's forehead.

“I'll be outside.”

“No.”

“I won't leave the hospital.”

Maya's fingers tightened.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He sat until she fell asleep.

Nora waited in the hallway.

When Daniel finally stepped outside, she handed him a clear evidence bag.

Inside was something recovered from the hidden chamber.

A torn piece of paper.

One corner contained printed text.

Daniel recognized the formatting immediately.

Calder Development board documents.

He read the surviving line.

...TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING INTEREST UPON EXECUTION...

Below it appeared half a handwritten note.

V — if D refuses, use E—

The remainder had been torn away.

Daniel looked at Nora.

“Grant uses initials in his handwritten notes.”

“So do millions of people.”

“You don't believe Maya?”

“I believe Maya was confined. I believe Vanessa was involved. I believe another person may have been involved.”

“Grant.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel looked through the hospital window at his sleeping daughter.

Nora lowered her voice.

“We arrested Vanessa at the house.”

He turned.

“She didn't resist.”

“Did she say anything?”

“One sentence.”

“What?”

Nora held his gaze.

“She said, ‘Grant will make Daniel think this was all me.’”

Daniel's phone rang.

GRANT MERCER.

Daniel and Nora looked at the screen.

He answered.

Grant's voice came urgently through the phone.

“Daniel, thank God. I heard they found Maya.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Is she okay?”

Still nothing.

Grant exhaled.

“Daniel?”

Daniel finally spoke.

“Come to the hospital.”

A pause.

“Of course.”

“And Grant?”

“Yes?”

Daniel looked at the torn document.

May you like

“Wear your lighthouse cufflinks.”

The line went silent.
