Chapter 14 - Ethan’s RainThe next major storm came in early autumn.

Rain hit the farmhouse roof after midnight.

Daniel woke to footsteps in the hallway.

Ethan stood outside his bedroom.

“You okay?”

Ethan shrugged.

Daniel lifted the blanket.

Ethan climbed onto the edge of the bed.

For several minutes they listened to rain.

“I hate that sound now,” Ethan said.

Daniel nodded.

“You don’t have to like it.”

“Do you think it goes away?”

“What?”

“The feeling.”

Daniel considered lying.

“No.”

Ethan looked at him.

“I think it changes.”

“How?”

“You remember what happened. But eventually your body learns it isn’t happening again.”

Ethan stared at the window.

“How does it learn?”

“By being safe enough times.”

Another roll of thunder.

Ethan’s shoulders tightened.

Daniel did not tell him to relax.

Did not say there was nothing to fear.

There had been something to fear once.

Pretending otherwise would not help.

Instead he said, “Want to check the dogs?”

Ethan looked surprised.

“In this?”

“We can stay under the covered walkway.”

They put on boots and raincoats.

Outside, the farm looked almost exactly like the night Daniel came home early.

Heavy rain.

Dark barn.

Water running through mud.

But the kennel was different.

Fresh bedding.

Full water.

Healthy feed stored in sealed bins.

Five recovering dogs resting under the roof.

Daniel turned on the light.

Cooper stood.

His ribs were less visible now.

Ash wagged his tail.

Ethan approached the gate.

For a moment, his hand stopped above the latch.

Daniel waited.

Ethan opened it.

The dogs remained calm.

He stepped inside.

Rain roared around the roof.

Ethan stood there breathing.

Then looked back.

“You coming?”

Daniel entered.

They sat on an overturned feed bucket.

Ash lay near Ethan’s feet.

The storm continued.

Nothing bad happened.

Ten minutes.

Then twenty.

Finally Ethan stood.

“I’m tired.”

They closed the gate behind them.

Ethan checked the new interior release once from the outside.

Then headed toward the house.

Daniel followed.

Halfway across the yard Ethan stopped.

“The rain sounds different.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How?”

Ethan shrugged.

“Just rain.”

It was not a miraculous recovery.

The next storm might still frighten him.

Some nights would be harder.

But Daniel understood what had happened.

His son had returned to the place where Margaret tried to teach him helplessness.

And this time, Ethan had opened the gate himself.
