Chapter 19 - The Second Break-In

At 2:13 a.m., the home alarm sounded.

Claire woke instantly.

Evan was already reaching for his phone.

They did not go downstairs.

They followed the safety plan established after Ryan’s arrest.

Bedroom door locked.

Lily brought into their room.

Police called.

Security cameras checked remotely.

A figure had entered through a basement window.

Not Ryan.

The man wore a hood and gloves.

He went directly toward Victor’s old study.

He never entered the bedrooms.

When police arrived, he fled through the back yard.

Officers arrested him two streets away.

His name was Jacob Niles.

A subcontractor who had done demolition work for Harbor Row.

His phone contained three recent calls from an unregistered prepaid number.

Investigators traced the purchase of that phone through store surveillance.

Martin Vale’s former paralegal had bought it.

The paralegal admitted Martin gave him cash and instructions.

Martin was arrested on additional charges related to evidence tampering and attempted burglary conspiracy.

Ryan denied involvement.

This time, Claire believed him.

Not because she trusted Ryan.

Because the evidence pointed elsewhere.

Martin was protecting himself.

The attempted burglary changed the prosecution.

It also changed Claire.

She no longer wanted Victor’s papers in the house.

Everything was digitized, copied, secured with counsel and stored appropriately.

The red ledger went into evidence custody.

The study was emptied.

Then Claire did something Lily did not expect.

She asked, “What should this room be?”

Lily thought carefully.

“A painting room.”

Claire smiled.

“A painting room?”

“And blocks.”

Evan leaned against the doorway.

“I vote for blocks.”

They transformed the study over several weekends.

The hidden compartment remained.

But instead of papers, Lily placed colored pencils inside.

“Secret pencils,” she said.

Claire crouched.

“What kind of secret?”

Lily thought.

“Happy secret.”

Her therapist had taught her language Claire wished every child learned.

Safe surprises have an ending.

Dangerous secrets make you afraid to tell.

Lily was learning the difference.

So was the family.

Meanwhile Martin’s arrest broke whatever loyalty remained between conspirators.

He began negotiating.

Ryan learned Martin might cooperate.

His attorney contacted prosecutors.

The same man who once said nobody was getting out now wanted a way out for himself.

He offered information about the public redevelopment leak and Vanessa’s role.

The prosecutor already knew most of it.

Then Ryan offered something new.

The missing stock certificate.

He knew where it was.

Claire listened as her attorney explained.

“He wants the government to consider his cooperation.”

“Where is the certificate?”

“He says he placed it somewhere Martin cannot reach.”

“Where?”

“A storage unit.”

The unit was searched.

Inside was the blue-edged certificate.

Alongside it was something else.

A box of Victor’s papers.

One contained a draft letter addressed to Ryan.

Victor had written:

Son, entitlement is not the belief that you deserve nothing. It is the belief that whatever you deserve may be taken without consent.

Ryan had kept the letter.

He had not destroyed it.

Claire did not know what to make of that.

Perhaps Ryan hated the words.

May you like

Perhaps he needed them.

Perhaps some part of him had always known his father was right.
