Chapter 6 - The Signature That Never HappenedVanessa returned downstairs to find three people waiting for her.

Ethan stood beside the dining table.

Miriam sat with the disputed purchase agreement in front of her.

Leo had been taken into the playroom, where he was watching cartoons with the housekeeper, Rosa Delgado.

Ethan held up the document.

"Did you sign this?"

Vanessa glanced at the page.

Her eyes paused on her own signature.

"Where did you get that?"

"Answer me."

She took the paper.

"Oh. The Hearthstone documents."

Miriam leaned forward.

"You recognize them?"

"Adrian asked me to witness a preliminary agreement."

"What agreement?"

"Something about the meadow."

Miriam's voice sharpened.

"I never signed this."

Vanessa gave a small, incredulous laugh.

"Then there must be a misunderstanding."

"Did you see me sign it?"

"Not personally."

Ethan stared at her.

"But your signature says you witnessed it."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"I signed what Adrian asked me to sign. I assumed his legal team had handled the details."

"Then why does it say you watched Miriam execute the agreement?"

"I didn't read every page."

Miriam slowly stood.

"You're telling us you signed a legal document saying you witnessed something you never witnessed?"

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

"Are you really going to let her interrogate me in our own home?"

Ethan felt the familiar pressure to intervene.

For seventeen months, he had treated every disagreement between the two women as a problem of competing loyalties.

He would comfort Vanessa.

Miriam would leave.

The underlying issue would disappear.

But the yellow car had not disappeared.

It lay in pieces in an evidence bag.

And his son had nearly died.

"Yes," Ethan said quietly. "I am."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

"I want you to answer her."

For a moment, he saw a version of his wife he had never encountered.

Not wounded.

Not frightened.

Calculating.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Adrian said it was routine. I trusted him."

Miriam gathered the papers.

"Then you should have no objection to telling that to the police."

Vanessa went still.

"The police?"

"Someone forged my signature."

"Don't be ridiculous."

"That's a crime, Vanessa."

"I didn't forge anything!"

The volume startled Ethan.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

They all looked toward the staircase.

Leo stood halfway down, holding his stuffed dinosaur.

"Are you fighting?"

Ethan immediately lowered his voice.

"No, buddy."

Vanessa reached for the child.

"Come here, sweetheart."

Leo backed away.

Ethan saw it.

Miriam saw it.

Vanessa saw it too.

Something like anger flickered behind her eyes before she recovered her smile.

"Leo, honey, I'm sorry you're upset."

The little boy clutched the railing.

"Don't take my dinosaur."

No one spoke.

Ethan walked upstairs, lifted his son, and carried him away.

By the time he returned, Vanessa was standing near the front door with her handbag.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"My sister's."

"You told me your sister was in Denver."

"She is."

"Vanessa."

She spun around.

"What do you want from me?"

"The truth."

"You've already decided what that is."

He thought of Leo's frightened face.

"I've decided he needs to feel safe."

Vanessa studied him.

"Are you asking me to leave?"

"For now."

She stared as if he had struck her.

Then she stepped closer.

"You realize what Miriam is doing, don't you? She's using an accident to destroy our marriage."

Ethan held her gaze.

"Then explain why Leo says you threw his car."

Vanessa's expression went empty.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Finally she whispered, "You're choosing them."

"I'm choosing to find out what happened."

She brushed past him.

The front door slammed.

Miriam watched through the window as Vanessa drove away.

"Call a lawyer," she said.

Ethan nodded.

"What kind?"

"One who doesn't work for Adrian."

That afternoon, Ethan contacted Rachel Bennett, a Richmond attorney recommended by a former business partner.

Rachel specialized in commercial disputes and fiduciary litigation.

After reviewing the purchase agreement, she called him directly.

"Mr. Whitaker, whoever prepared this document may have committed serious fraud."

"What does that mean for the land?"

"It means we need the original, the alleged notarial records, and the transaction history. An unsigned or forged agreement cannot ordinarily transfer trust property simply because someone claims it does. But that doesn't stop a fraudulent claimant from causing expensive trouble."

"Can Hearthstone take the meadow?"

"Not merely by sending a letter."

Ethan exhaled.

"Good."

"Don't relax yet. There's something else."

Rachel directed him to the final attachment.

It referred to a payment of $3.2 million in preliminary development expenses.

The funds had allegedly been advanced through Whitaker Civil Works under a related-party services agreement.

Ethan frowned.

"I've never authorized a payment like that."

"Your company records say otherwise."

"That doesn't make sense."

"Then someone needs to explain why your signature appears on the authorization."

Ethan opened the attachment.

His name sat beneath a digital approval stamp.

He remembered approving a smaller environmental assessment months earlier.

He did not remember approving millions of dollars.

Rachel asked him to stop accessing company records without preserving an audit trail and to engage independent forensic accountants.

Ethan agreed.

After the call, he found Miriam in the study.

She was examining Allison's old photograph.

"How much did you know?" he asked.

"About Adrian?"

"About all of it."

Miriam considered him.

"Enough to be afraid. Not enough to accuse someone responsibly."

Ethan sat down.

"Allison warned me."

"I know."

"I told her Adrian was practically family."

Miriam's eyes filled with sadness.

"She told me you said that."

He covered his face.

"Why didn't she force me to listen?"

"She was dying, Ethan."

The words stripped away every excuse.

"She wanted to spend her remaining time with you and Leo. She shouldn't have needed to spend it proving that a man you trusted was stealing from your company."

Ethan sat in silence.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

You think the worst thing I did was throw a toy. You have no idea what Adrian will do if you refuse that deal.

May you like

Before Ethan could respond, she sent another message.

And if you show anyone this conversation, he'll make sure you lose everything.
