Chapter 6 - The CrackThe first crack appeared seven weeks after the pour.

Thin.

Barely visible.

Running diagonally across the southwest corner.

Concrete cracks.

Everyone knew that.

Shrinkage.

Temperature.

Curing.

Martin photographed it.

Measured it.

Marked both ends.

Three weeks later, it was longer.

A second crack appeared twelve feet away.

Peter Lang returned.

He blamed differential curing first.

Then requested elevation measurements.

The southwest corner had settled six millimeters.

Small.

Not nothing.

Derek Sloan joined by video from Denver.

“Can construction continue?”

Peter hesitated.

“Yes.”

Martin looked at him.

Peter added:

“With monitoring.”

Steel framing continued.

Loading increased.

By October, settlement reached fourteen millimeters in one area.

The cracks widened.

Peter stopped saying curing.

Emily learned about it from Jack.

He drove to the Dawson farm one Saturday to buy eggs.

Thomas looked at him.

“You people buy eggs from engineers now?”

Jack laughed.

“I’m a construction worker.”

Emily emerged from the barn.

“What happened?”

Jack had not planned to tell her.

Then he remembered how often everyone regretted not telling people things.

“The slab moved.”

Emily stopped.

“How much?”

“Not much.”

“How much?”

“About half an inch in one corner.”

She looked toward the construction site.

“Which corner?”

Jack pointed.

Emily’s face changed.

“The channel bends there.”

Jack sighed.

“Of course it does.”

That afternoon Emily opened Walter’s 1993 notebook.

A sketch showed a shallow sink in the lower field.

Same orientation.

Same line.

She photographed the page.

Sent it to Martin.

No message.

Just the image.

He called ten minutes later.

“Can I show this to Peter?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have more?”

“Probably.”

Martin looked around the temporary office.

Crack maps covered one wall.

Emily’s photograph arrived on his monitor.

Walter’s hand-drawn depression sat almost exactly beneath the problem corner.

Coincidence was becoming expensive.
